The painting is divided by two axes of symmetry that guide the interpretation of the melody. On the one hand, the vertical axis marking the boundary between the ascending and descending slope of the treetops determines whether the notes of the melody rise or fall. On the other hand, the horizontal axis separating the trees from their reflection translates musically into the presence or absence of an echo.
