Suspense

While the photograph reads as a trace of the past, in its pictorial form, perhaps because the elements are added rather than captured, the movement is perceived as a possibility and suggests a "to come". A similar impression can be felt when listening to Steve Reich's piece Piano Phase . At the end, the abrupt interruption of the piece's regular and frenetic rhythm leaves the listener hanging, like an unexpected cliff surprising a running horse.

The piano piece that accompanies the painting was composed with the intention of recreating the effect of suspension caused by its abrupt interruption.
